Happy La Befana

Jan. 6th, 2010 | 10:23 am
music: recorded episode of Heroes
posted by: [info]ravens_shadow

Long story short, Befana followed the three wise men, traveling to see this baby Jesus all the cool kids were talking about. But since she was old and traveling on foot, she couldn't keep up, so the caravan slowly moved out of sight. Unfortunately for her, she had no idea what the baby Jesus was supposed to look like (different from other newborns, more wrinkly, less?), so she took the gifts she'd brought, all she could afford--oranges, pastries and the like--and left one for each pair of children's shoes she saw at every doorstep.

Thus, in Italy, every January 6, children (or the young at heart) wake up to a few little treats in the morning.

And a wonderful Italian dinner in the evening, because that's how we roll. (Actually, we're doing a pork roast tonight, but there is homemade pizza for lunch, so it balances out.)

Happy Befania everyone.

PROGRESS

can be interpreted in so many ways

i like to think

progress

is an illusion

disguised by someone finding a means to an end

but no one likes to contemplate what happens when that end is met

so all our lives, we run around in circles finding excuses to lengthen our "progress"

in fear that we'll find nothing left when everything is said and done.

so, that being said, here is my resolution for 2010:

Embrace All Endings

as bittersweet reminders

of what was, versus what would always be

& look forward to starting over again

& again

& again

& again...

“Why oh why do you insist on showing us your lousy drawings?”, you ask.
Because you don’t get to see happy things made by me very often, that’s why.
Remember a time when taking photos of ducks was the only thing that could really calm me down?
Now it’s making these drawings. Ducks don’t do it for me anymore.

The Snarky Bride: O holy veil

Jan. 3rd, 2010 | 04:32 pm
posted by: [info]opalline

When I went to try on wedding dresses back in October/November, one dress that I tried looked lovely with a cathedral length beaded veil for added drama. I asked the salesgirl about the price, and I remember her telling me that it was $50, which I thought was reasonable. Since they always had it in stock, I decided I’d wait until I bought the dress, so I wasn’t stuck with a veil that I may not use.

This past weekend, I stopped at the store and decided to get the veil since I liked it so much. I tried it on again and of course the filmy material cascaded down my shoulders and looked stunning even though I was just wearing a t-shirt and jeans. Basking in the glow of pretty-bride-ness, I happened to glance at the price tag, and imagine my shock and horror when I saw not $50, but $500 (!!!!! – 5 exclamation points for added incredulity).

WHAT THE??!!

I mentioned this to the salesgirl helping me, and she said I probably misheard, because the only $50 veil in the store was a shorter plain one. I guess I must’ve misheard, but I must’ve also missed the memo informing me that veils were made from gossamer and moonbeams spun into fabric by blind infants from Sweden. Now, I can appreciate the labour that would’ve gone into making the cathedral-length beaded one – someone probably had to sit there and sew on the beads by hand. However, I fail to see how a plain piece of tulle with a haircomb attached can justify $50? I recently bought a $15 dressy beaded top from Forever 21, and even that had more labour and materials put into it. I’m sorry, but my bank account just isn’t ready for this kind of assault.

Needless to say, I dropped the veil and retreated, complete with waving white flag and crazy eyes.

Wrapping up 2009

Dec. 31st, 2009 | 11:37 pm
posted by: [info]opalline

1. What’s the one thing you did in 2009 that you have never done before?
Moved off-campus. Bought a car. Got engaged. Went to Europe. Became a Coordinator at work.

2. Did you keep your New Year’s Resolutions, and will you make more for the new year?\
Let’s see, what did I resolve last year?

1. See Europe – DONE!!! So proud of myself.

2. Continue taking Chinese courses and memorizing characters – failed

3. Increase my RRSP contributions – Half-kept

4. Buy only what I love. No more cheap shoes – will continue

5. Take pictures of memory items and then let them go – failed

6. Continue yoga and exercise at home at least 1x a week. Play more badminton. – failed at yoga. played badminton until I hurt my foot and then stopped.

7. Do the program at Blanche MacDonald. Fiscally, this may not be feasible, but I will aim for it anyway – carry over

New resolutions for the new year to come in a separate post.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
yes – J’s sister, to a sweet, plump little boy
4. Did anyone close to you die?
yes – one my my mum’s closest friends who was elderly. It was inevitable but still a shock when it happened.
5. What countries did you visit?
USA, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, France, England
6. What would you like in 2010, that you lacked in 2009?
More willpower and self-control. Don’t we all?

7. What dates(s) from 2009 that will be etched in your memory and why?
March 1st, the day that J asked for the biggest commitment of my life to date

8. What was your biggest achievement this year?
Planning and executing a 3-week stint around Europe, stepping into the Coordinator role, and carrying over to next year, planning a massive (to me) wedding

9. What was your biggest failure?
Not getting into the grad program I had applied to. I was somewhat saddened at first, but got over it, and it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I wouldn’t have done well at this point anyway, I don’t think.

10. Did you suffer from illness or injury?
Still hard at work staving off H1N1. Hurt my foot playing badminton and hobbled around not realizing that my leg had swollen to the size of a ham.

11. What was the best thing that you bought?
A flat-screen TV (well, technically J bought it) and a comfy small grey sectional. Oh, and a CAR. And a digital piano. I went all-out this year. :)

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Ours, because we started volunteering with PADS. it’s been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done, and playing with adorable puppies doesn’t exactly hurt.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
The idiots downstairs from my grandparents were worse than ever this year. But thanks to my meticulous note-keeping and use of camera phones, they got KICKED OUT!! Goodbye and good riddance, suckers (with an f)!

14. Where did most of your money go?
Europe trip was $$$ but totally worth it.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
The Europe trip. And marriage.

16. What song will remind you of 2009?
Black-eyed peas: boom boom pow (dislike) and I gotta feeling (like)

17. Compared to last year this time, were you:
i) happier or sadder? happier.
ii) thinner or fatter? Fatter – lots
iii) richer or poorer? poorer – every spare penny going into the wedding

18. What did you wish you had done more of?
Exercise. Stopping badminton was necessary but not good. Stopping yoga was just lazy. More volunteering with adorable puppies.

19. What did you wish you had done less of?
Buying lunch. I always feel guilty when I don’t pack a lunch, but that usually isn’t enough to motivate me to prepare something the night before.
20. How did you spend Christmas?
Christmas eve: huge house party in which an out-of-control group of kids dug into a pile of presents with such gusto that it resembled a shark tank feeding frenzy. The aftermath was not pretty.
Christmas day: dinner with my parents. super boring
Boxing day: lining up at 6am in the chilly wet fog and the immense relief when J finally drove up with Timmy Ho’s.
21. Did you fall in love in 2009?
No, but we stayed in love

22. How many one night stands?
heh.

23. What was your favourite TV program?
If I had to pick just one that is completely new, I would say 30 Rock, since I just started watching it. Other favourites include:

Grey’s Anatomy
Gossip Girl
Mad Men
All of the totally inane wedding shows on TLC – Cake Boss, Yes to the Dress, and whatever else happens to be on that is wedding related.
24. Do you hate anyone that you didn’t hate this time last year?
No, but I continued to hate the morons downstairs (see Question 13). How these people manage to find a woman willing to reproduce with them is beyond me.

25.What was the best book you read all year?
Push, by Sapphire, and then Precious, the movie based on it.

26. What was your greatest musical discovery?

27. What did you want and get?
A car and a diamond ring.

28. What did you want and not get?

World peace.

29. What was your favourite film this year?
I really liked Slumdog Millionaire, which I watched this year but was technically from last year.

30. What did you do on your birthday this year, and how old were you?

Turned 27. Organized a formal meeting of the parents on the Most Auspicious Day. Ate a magnificent feast of a luncheon and a massive taro cream cake that later induced labour (see Question 3)
31. What is one thing that would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

It’s hard to say. I achieved my biggest resolution in the last few years (Europe) and I felt like that was no small feat. I know some people go away for months at a time and I’m very envious of that, but it’s ridiculously hard to get away once you start working and have fixed commitments like a mortgage, a partner, or kids.
32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept for 2009?
Comfortably casual. I’ve lost my edge even as I learn to embrace the new trends like sweater dresses (which I’ve always loved), leggings, and boots over jeans (loving now).

33. What kept you sane?
I was sane?

34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Gabourey Sidibe ever since I saw the trailer for Precious.

35. What political issue stirred you the most?
Not much moved by politics this year (bad, I know), although I have my opinions on the US Health Care Reform and the introduction of the HST in BC.

36. Who do you miss?
My pal N who moved away. Wah! things aren’t the same without her. Poo to C who stole her away from me (just kidding! C, you are awesome).
37. Who was the best new person you met?

38. Tell us a valuable lesson you learned in 2009.
Moved off-campus. Bought a car.

Their most significant performance to date took place at the brand new Koncerthuset in Copenhagen in September 2008. Together with The Danish National Chamber Orchestra they performed the newly orchestrated Parades from start to finish. This special show was a breathtaking, majestic affair and was recorded for posterity in sound and pictures. The recordings will be released in October 2009 as Performing Parades.
